A woman I did not know recently approached me holding her tattered copy of the Phoenix prayer, which was created to cope with the painful shock of the clergy sex abuse scandal. She confided that she used this prayer every day to ask healing for the church. Her faith was exactly the nudge I needed to compile into one resource our prayer-poems and beautiful art by my dear friend and gifted artist, Eileen Cantlin Verbus.
At various times, FutureChurch members and supporters told me how much they appreciate our efforts to root our work in prayer. They often request extra copies for their families, friends and small faith communities. This gladdens my heart because prayer is essential and central to the work of reforming and renewing the church. Steeping ourselves in the still, silent God-life within can reveal those constructive, loving reform activities needed by our church, as well as provide the strength, creativity and wisdom to carry them out.
