As FutureChurch continues its 35th-anniversary celebration, we are thrilled to welcome Robert Cortegiano, Ph.D., for an engaging and forward-looking discussion on the sensus fidelium and the future of synodality. Building on insights from his illuminating doctoral study of reform movements—particularly FutureChurch—Robert will connect past and present, inviting us to reflect on the issues shaping Catholic life and the Church’s path ahead.
Robert Cortegiano earned his Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Fordham University, where his dissertation, Intra-Ecclesial Reform Movements After Vatican II: “FutureChurch” as a Model for Discerning the Sensus Fidelium, explored the role of progressive Catholic reform organizations in contemporary ecclesial life. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Religion from Colgate University, a Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling from Fordham University’s Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education, and a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York.
Robert’s research interests include ecclesiology, ethnography, and practical theology, with particular attention to reform movements such as Call to Action and FutureChurch and their significance for U.S. Catholicism today. He lives in Queens, NY, with his wife, Kristen, and their two sons, and enjoys traveling, running, watching New York Yankees baseball, and attending opera, theatre, and jazz performances in NYC.
