Release date: September 22, 2016

Catholic Women Speak About Their Call to the Permanent Diaconate, Their Struggle to Answer that Call, and the Rise of a New Movement

What:  Three Catholic women will address and answer questions from the press regarding their call to the permanent diaconate, their struggles to answer that call in the Roman Catholic Church and their recognition of a new movement emerging during a telephone press conference on September 27, 2016 at 1:00pm EDT.

Who:  From September 16 – 18, 2016, twenty pioneering Catholic women from the United States and Canada made history, participating in the first-ever gathering of women to explore their call to the permanent diaconate.   FutureChurch, which has been advocating for the ordination of women as deacons for over a decade, sponsored the retreat in Cleveland, Ohio. Three women who attended the retreat will speak about their experience in the church, the mounting energy of the movement to ordain women deacons and their plans to advocate for change in the future.

When:

Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 1:00pm EDT.

Where:

This event will be held via teleconference.  Media can learn more about the participants and register at https://futurechurch.org/retreatpressconference.

Why:

On August 2, 2016, Pope Francis appointed a commission to study the restoration of women deacons. Twenty Catholic women who stand ready to enter a discernment process should the diaconate be opened once again to women, gathered to share their stories, struggles and hopes. They ranged in age from 27 to 71 and serve the church in the United States and Canada as pastoral administrators of parishes without a priest, hospice chaplains, pastoral ministers, spiritual directors, prison chaplains, RCIA directors and more.  They believe it is time to ordain women as deacons.
