Join FutureChurch in Anaheim, California for an in-person gathering featuring Cecilia González-Andrieu, Ph.D.
In a world marked by conflict, displacement, and deep social fractures, Pope Francis’ image of the Church as a field hospital calls us to renewed purpose. This gathering will invite us to reflect on how the Church can more faithfully respond to urgent human needs—especially the suffering of migrants and asylum seekers who are navigating unprecedented danger and uncertainty.
Our presenter, Dr. Cecilia González-Andrieu, a leading Catholic theologian and advocate for justice, will guide us in exploring how the Church might realign its priorities to stand with those most in need. She will offer particular insight into the experiences of immigrant families, the moral imperative to protect human dignity, and concrete ways our communities can accompany, advocate for, and act alongside the most vulnerable right now.
The evening will include a featured presentation by Dr. González-Andrieu, followed by table conversations that invite participants to share insights, hopes, and practical commitments. Food and fellowship will be provided as we break bread together and imagine our role in building up a compassionate, justice-centered Church.
Come ready to listen, learn, and help shape a healing mission for our time.
Cecilia González-Andrieu is professor of Theology and Human Rights at Loyola Marymount University and President of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States. She completed the doctorate at the Graduate Theological Union and UC Berkeley, where she was first to combine systematic theology with religion and the arts under the late Alex García-Rivera.
González -Andrieu is a leading scholar of theological aesthetics, which she proposes as a public theology way to bring communities together, respect and celebrate otherness, and lift the theological insights of those who know and express themselves from the peripheries.
As a budding scholar González-Andrieu was named one of the most promising theologians of the next generation by America Magazine, where today she is a contributing writer, penning a number of significant essays on political theology, Latinx theologies, women’s issues and theological aesthetics. Her book Bridge to Wonder: Art as a Gospel of Beauty received international acclaim for its ability “to link art’s power to move beyond the discursive, cognitive and propositional to a theology grounded in an experience that opens the imagination and moves one to encounter ‘God in all things’.”
Other collaborative publications include Teaching Global Theologies: Power and Praxis, and contributor to Go Into the Streets: The Welcoming Church of Pope Francis, along with a host of articles, keynote addresses and podcasts on theological aesthetics, social justice and women. Her address for the Catholic Theological Society of America Wounded Grace and the Disquieting Invitation of the Real, represents her emphasis on God’s vision as revealed in the most vulnerable. Her current work investigates urgent issues on peace, justice and planetary flourishing.
González -Andrieu teaches in LMU’s Department of Theological Studies, and is an advisor for the Discerning Deacons Project. An alumna of the Hispanic Theological Initiative, she is co-founder of LMU’s initiatives with undocumented students. Awards include GTU Alumna of the Year, the O’Hara Graff Award from the Catholic Theological Society of America and the Virgilio Elizondo Award from the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States.
