Joanna Arellano-Gonzalez Accepts 2026 Fr. Louis J. Trivison Award

FutureChurch is honored to present the 2026 Louis J. Trivison Award to Joanna Arellano-Gonzalez in recognition of her founding leadership of the Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership (CSPL), and her unwavering commitment to justice, both in the world and within the Church.

Joanna is a proud first-generation Mexican American from Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood. She co-founded CSPL and serves as its Director of Training and Formation. When migrants in detention were being treated inhumanely, CSPL led Eucharistic processions to detention facilities in Chicago. The processions drew national attention and helped move the U.S. bishops to speak out. In presenting the award, FutureChurch Executive Director Russ Petrus described Joanna as “the real deal,” a preacher who speaks prophetically “in a way I can only describe as ‘ordained by God.’”

In her acceptance remarks, Joanna tells the story of her mother, a “firecracker” who taught her that “God gave you a voice so that you could use it.” She also describes the work of CSPL: daily pastoral accompaniment of detained migrants at the Broadview ICE facility, organizing for clean drinking water, and forming new women leaders. And she shares her dream of a Church that “looks more like a fireworks show,” one that “makes room for every gift to shine.”

The Fr. Louis Trivison Award is given to a Roman Catholic who exhibits outstanding leadership in advancing FutureChurch’s Vatican II mission or vision in one or more areas of: teaching, administration, research, publication, advocacy, and pastoral care.
